Wild Sheep Society of BC Supporting Statement RE: Wild/Domestic Sheep Separation

The Wild Sheep Society of BC believes in scientific solutions to resource management

challenges pertaining to Wild and Domestic Sheep Interaction.

This research has shown unequivocally that disease transmission from domestic sheep to wild sheep occurs; reinforcing our belief that potential contact between wild and domestic sheep and goats is a primary challenge facing wild sheep survival, enhancement, restoration and management in British Columbia.

Because of this, the Wild Sheep Society supports comprehensive strategies to implement and manage for effective temporal and spatial separation of domestic sheep and goats from wild sheep, along with risk assessments being performed, periodically re-evaluated and revised as necessary to identify potentials for contact.

The Wild Sheep Society of BC strongly supports efforts currently underway to enable regulatory changes, allowing for local government bylaws to require separation measures for sheep farms in areas with high risk of contact with wild sheep populations.

It is only through regulatory change that the wild sheep herds of BC will be ensured long term viability, free from disease transmission from domestic sheep.
